Welcome Back to SY 2017-2018!

Friday, August 4, 2017 - 6:39pm

Dear Addison families, I hope you had a great summer and found time to relax, discover, and spend time with loved ones.Shortly after school ended, I spent an inspiring week in New York with six teachers learning about Writers Workshop at Teacher’s College, Columbia University.   In July, my family and I spent ten days in the North Shore of Kauai which was breathtaking and rejuvenating. One of the highlights of the trip was hiking eight miles to the Hanakapi’ai Falls on my own.   The only mishap was that I slipped close to the waterfall and tore ligaments in my right thumb which proved to be both a curse and a blessing as my doctor informed my family that “mom can’t do any more dishes this summer”. I’m thrilled to be starting my fourth year at Addison as each year I gain a greater appreciation for the connection, growth, and support we provide each other as a community.  Nancy and I returned to Addison on July 27th and the teachers will return on August 9 to prepare for the year ahead.

This year, we are welcoming two new classroom teachers and three support teachers at Addison.  Taline Cox is returning to Addison after working as an instructional aide for a year and completing the Stanford Teacher Education Program.  She will teach 4th grade.  Lisa Durham, an experienced teacher from Nixon Elementary School, will work one day per week in 2nd grade as a job share partner with Lynn Beck.  Finally, Alison Bolos was hired as our Intervention Support Teacher, Amanda Gantley will support our English Language Learners, and Aleksandra Dudukovic (also an Addison parent!) was hired to teach Spectra Arts to our intermediate students.  I am very appreciative of the talents and skills this new staff brings.

Please see the list of important upcoming dates as we start the 2017-18 school year:

  • The Kindergarten Screening is on Tuesday, August 8. The families of entering Kindergarteners have been mailed their child’s appointed time but feel free to call the office if the information is needed.

  • For new families, PTA will be hosting two New Family Campus Tours on Friday, August 11th from 3:30-4pm OR 6-6:30pm. Please meet in front of the MP Room.

  • Classroom/ teacher assignments will posted outside of room 3 in the hallway on August 11th at 4pm. Please keep in mind that a lot of time and careful consideration goes into creating balanced classes. Please plan on picking up your Back to School Packet that contains important information on August 11th between 4-7pm near the MP Room.

  • Our Kindergarten Potluck/Play Date will be held on the Kindergarten playground on August 11th from 4-7pm.

  • The first day of school is Tuesday, August 15th. School starts at 8:15am. After dropping off your child, the PTA will host our annual Back to School Coffee from 8:15-9:15am on the blacktop. At that time, I look forward to welcoming you in person and sharing exciting new initiatives/ programs in the year ahead. As a reminder, Addison will be providing breakfast for any student. Breakfast will be served from 7:45-8:05am every day in the MP Room. Students will need to stay in the MP Room until 8:05am when our assigned teachers can provide campus supervision outside. During the year, if you need to drop off your child between 7:45- 8:05am, please direct him/her to the MP Room as they cannot be left on the playground unsupervised.

You can also view the entire school calendar at www.addison.pausd.org.

Thank you again to PTA and PiE for all your support in opening the new school year.  The time and funding that these two important parent groups provide enable the unique opportunities and community building that promote student success. I am so honored to continue the journey of teaching and learning with your children and look forward to seeing you soon!
