Welcome Back to School!

Friday, August 3, 2018 - 2:14pm

Dear Addison Families,

Welcome to a new school year!  Whether you’re a new or returning family, I look forward to seeing you and your child(ren) on August 14th.  As you know or will soon learn, Addison is a very special community due to the strong partnership between staff, parents/ guardians, and students.  We work hard, support each other, and have a lot of fun!  Addison has become a second family for me as I’ve grown close to the community over the past four years.  For this reason and many more, I’m very excited to start the 2018-19 school year.

If you’ve been to or around Addison, you’ll notice some changes!  Construction began on June 4th and work on the new buildings is underway.  We have spent the past four years envisioning and planning for our “dream school” that includes flexible classroom spaces, a larger library with cozy reading nooks, an expanded Multi-Purpose room that is multifunctional and allows us to gather as a single school community, and an expanded playground with innovative, inclusive, and exciting play equipment.  For this reason, I’m thrilled that construction has finally begun. The contractors accomplished a lot during the summer including relocating our food service facility and lunch tables, demolishing the MP building, and grading and installing utilities for the new Administration and Library building. New AKC facilities will arrive in the next few weeks (we’ll start the year using the old AKC facilities), and will hopefully be occupied in September. Weekly updates will continue to be posted on our Addison website: https://addison.pausd.org/construction/construction-updates

I’ve spent a lot of time the past couple weeks walking the campus with various groups to consider and discuss student safety, activities, and community events in our new space. I’ll be updating our families through newsletters and Principal Coffees but there is a couple things to note as we begin the new school year.  Please reference our new Walk and Roll Map that will be uploaded at the end of next week and outlines safe routes to school and the new location of our bike racks: https://addison.pausd.org/about/traffic-and-safety  Also, we staggered our recess and lunch schedules for 1st- 5th grade so primary and intermediate students would not overlap on the playground and have adequate space to play. Also, we’re adding new recess and lunch activities through a parternership with Playworks this year https://www.playworks.org/about/

Please see the list of important upcoming dates as we start the 2018-19 school year:

•The Kindergarten Screening is on Tuesday, August 7. The families of entering Kindergarteners have been mailed their child’s appointed time but feel free to call the office if the information is needed. 

•Classroom/ teacher assignments will posted on the side of room 13 (Middlefield entrance) AND the Kinder Yard (for K classes) on August 10th at 4pm. Please keep in mind that a lot of time and careful consideration goes into creating balanced classes. Please plan on picking up your Back to School Information from PTA on August 10th between 4-6pm near the class list postings.  There will also be an ice cream truck and each student will receive a ticket for one treat☺

•Our Kindergarten Potluck/Play Date will be held on the Kindergarten playground on August 10th from 4-6pm. After socializing with other K families, please join the rest of our community on the blacktop near Middlefield.

•The first day of school is Tuesday, August 14th. School starts at 8:15am.  After dropping off your child, the PTA will host our annual Back to School Coffee from 8:15-9:15am near room 21 (Middlefield/ Lincoln). As a reminder, Addison will be providing breakfast for any student. Breakfast will be served from 7:45-8:05am every day in room 21.

Finally, please see our updated handbook for important information related to Addison including staffing, calendar, policies/ procedures, and any question you might have regarding Addison: https://addison.pausd.org/addison-parent-handbook.  Looking forward to a great year ahead!

Fondly,

Amanda Boyce
