Principal's Update - April 15, 2020

Thursday, April 16, 2020 - 2:15pm

Dear Addison Families,

I have no doubt this has been an exciting week that has required patience and dedication as we launched in to Phase III learning.  April 13th was similar to the first day of school when students were exposed to a new style of learning, new content, and establishing norms to ensure that online interactions are respectful and appropriate.  Like the start of a new school year, there were some bumps in the road but we are working them out day by day.  I feel confident that each week will be smoother than the previous one as staff and parents settle in to our new roles and routines related to online schooling.

One of the challenges this week, specifically with K-2 students, was having the child log in to his/her own Schoology account (instead of the parent).  We learned students would need to log on under their account in order to post comments, assignments, etc.  Therefore, I attached the directions for students to log on and please note that the password formula will be the same for each grade K-2 student:

Username: 950xxxxxxx (student numbers that parents can locate in Infinite campus; parents log in to the portal with their credentials and can access IC to find their student numbers)

Password: first initial of first name, first initial of last name, !, mmddyy (birthdate)  [all one “word” with no commas between…ex: fr!mmddyy]

The passwords have been updated/changed by our grade 3-5 teachers so teachers will need to send those passwords if needed.  Please make sure that students are logging in to their own Schoology accounts moving forward as this is one way we are tracking participation.

Also, I mentioned in earlier messages that students are expected to log on to Schoology each day and complete the assignments posted by the teachers.  Teachers will be completing a Trimester 3 progress report so participation and engagement will be closely monitored.  Teachers, particularly in the older grades,  have shared that they are getting questions about assignments or how to submit assignments that are described in video lessons and/or Schoology.  If a child is confused about how to submit an assignment or what is required of them, please encourage him/her to re-read the information carefully or re-watch the video as we are promoting student independence during Phase III.

If your child is in need of emergency financial assistance to cover basic needs including groceries and/or gas, contact RISE at  or  650.444.1236 to request gift cards ($200 per family) to support your needs.  These funds are made possible by generous donations to the Palo Alto Community Fund and the support of LifeMoves, RISE, and community members.

In case you didn’t have the chance to check out the Addison School News page, I’ve attached it here.  Along with my message, Nancy, Joy, and Lina created videos for the students that are heart-warming!  Take a look and we look forward to sharing updates and videos again on Monday.
