Principal's Update - April 12, 2020

Thursday, April 16, 2020 - 1:25pm

Dear Addison Families,

I hope you are all healthy, safe, and have been able to find some time to connect as a family during this past week.  My two daughters, husband, and I have appreciated the opportunity to slow down, take long walks, bake, play a lot of board games, and enjoy the boundless energy of our puppy!  Also, the Addison Staff received some exciting news this past week; Ms. Dowd, 1st grade teacher, welcomed her first child, Nella Noraima Cordero, on April 9th!  Both mom and baby are doing well.  Molly Naughton, long-time Addison aide who knows the room 4 students well, will be substitute teaching for Ms. Dowd starting tomorrow.

This week we are beginning Phase 3 of online teaching and learning.  Grade level teams have aligned their teaching and will post asynchronous lessons through Schoology that students can access anytime during the day.  Library, art, music, and PE lessons have been created by our incredible specials staff and will be considered enrichment in addition to daily grade-level lessons.  Special Education staff will also be providing modified support commensurate to the online learning structures set up by the District for each child on their caseload.  Finally, teachers will continue connecting with students in a variety of ways and hold daily office hours to support student learning.

As a co-administrator in all of the teacher's courses, I've had the opportunity to look through their course and am so proud of all the teacher's hard work preparing for this transition in a relatively short period of time.  We are all learning through this time together and communication is key! Please do not hesitate to ask your child's teacher anything that is unclear. Should you need additional assistance after speaking with your child's teachers, I am also available and happy to assist.

We understand that the most effective learning environment for elementary school children is at school; however, during this unprecedented time, online learning is how we are having to conduct school. To remain enrolled in PAUSD, Phase 3 activities and structures are required.  Attendance will not be recorded, but student participation in class will be closely monitored.  If your child is sick, cannot attend a zoom class meeting, or cannot turn in an assignment when it is due, please contact your child's teacher and let him/her know. Teachers and I are available to help and want to work with you to create the conditions for success in this new online learning environment.

I also want to stay connected to the students so I have added an "Addison School Newsletter for Students" page in each teacher's course.  I will update the newsletter each week with birthdays, important events, and front office staff videos!  Please ask your child to take a look at the Addison School Newsletter on Mondays.  This week I posted a picture of baby Nella and included videos from Nancy and myself.  I have also made a call for student photos as one will be highlighted each week!

I look forward to our continued journey together and please let your child's teacher or I know if we can support in any way.  Additionally, please see resources below if needed:

Finally, as we make this transition to required online learning, please take a few moments to review the attached student guidelines for Zoom and Schoology.  We appreciate your support!
