Principal's Message- Aug. 23, 2015

Sunday, August 23, 2015 - 7:09pm

Dear Addison Parents and Families,

This past Tuesday, we welcomed 481 students in 21 classrooms for the 2015-16 school year!  I loved seeing the eager, excited, and curious faces of the students entering their classrooms anticipating new experiences and learning in the year ahead.  I was able to visit all the classrooms on the first day to welcome back the returning students and meet our new friends.  The school joined together on Wednesday for our Welcome Assembly when grade level teaching teams  many staff members were introduced and we discussed how to problem-solve and navigate the social experiences on the playground.  This year, we are focusing on empowering students to learn problem-solving skills on the playground by practicing the “Peace Path” and “Conflict Stoppers”.

I am also excited to share that all teachers were given a new reading curriculum this year- Readers Workshop by Lucy Calkins.  We have been using the Writers Workshop the past few years so the Readers Workshop curriculum is a great compliment that will allow teachers to seamlessly integrate the two language arts strands.  Also, teachers will be exploring different math programs this year as we prepare for a math adoption next year.  Furthermore, teachers are joining together each month as a Professional Learning Community (PLC) to identify essential math standards in each grade level and to analyze student work in math with the goal to differentiate.  We started this work this past Friday and it was exciting to see and hear the teachers build on each other’s ideas and collaborate on common learning expectations for students.

I also want to ask for support to fill important positions at Addison this year.  We are looking for a few more editors for the Addison Advisor so that we can continue bringing the Addison Advisor to you every week.  This is a great way to get involved at Addison and get the inside scoop on what is happening at Addison before the news is even published!  If you are interested, please contact Susie Levine ( Cindy Adwere-Boamah ( for more information.  Also, please contact me ( if you, a grandparent, or neighbor may be interested in a campus supervisor position as we need to fill multiple positions to ensure adequate supervision at lunch.

Finally, I have a very exciting update.  Last June, Addison Elementary was the grateful recipient of a $25,000 Planning grant by a local anonymous donor.  Through the summer and early part of the 2015-2016 school year, a small committee of staff members, parents, and district office met three times to begin the process of considering a variety of campus improvements that would make a positive impact for Addison students and our community.  Furthermore, teachers were asked during our staff meeting last week to contribute their ideas and vision for the best learning environment.  Finally, I plan to continue the dialogue with our students, parents, and School Site Council and will keep you apprised of our progress.
