Principal's Message, 9/3/2018

Monday, September 3, 2018 - 9:03am

Dear Addison Families,

It was great to see so many new and returning families at Back to School Night this past Tuesday.  In case you missed it, your child's teacher would be happy to meet with you to share the highlights; please email him or her directly.  Also, this is a good time to remind our community that we have a Spanish speaking parent liaison, Claudia Quiroga Cortez, who is available to work with parents on a weekly basis to answer questions, keep parents updated on school events and direct classroom concerns.  She is available to assist any family in English or Spanish so please reach out to her if you'd like to

Next week, applications will go home with 3rd-5th graders for an opportunity to participate in our Playworks Junior Coach Leadership Program.  Students will have the opportunity to positively contribute to our school, work with cross grade level students, and build leadership capacity. Please note that in order to participate, Junior Coaches will have to meet after school on a Wednesday from 1:20-3:20pm each month. More details are outlined in the application coming home on Tuesday.

Also, 4th and 5th graders will have the opportunity to audition for "Alice in Wonderland" this Wednesday or Thursday!  All students who are interested will be in the cast and we are grateful to Palo Alto Children's Theater for coordinating and directing the show.  This will be the first outdoor show hosted at a school so they are not seeking a stage crew at this time. There is more information regarding the dates and times of rehearsals and performances in the Monday envelope that went home last week but if you need another flyer, please pick one up at the office.

We had a very productive School Site Council (SSC) meeting this past Wednesday.  Site Council is comprised of an even number of parents and staff members to provide input on our school goals and plan, discuss traffic and safety, and capital improvements.  This year, now that construction is underway, our Project Managers will attend each meeting to share updates, answer questions, and bring forth any new items that require decisions (i.e. where to plant our new trees).  These meetings are open to the public and are held the 3rd Wednesday each month from 2:45-3:45pm in the Library (check our website calendar for confirmed dates).  The agenda and minutes will be posted in the shadow box outside the library facing the Kindergarten wing.

The highlight of construction shared at this past meeting is that concrete will be poured on the completed foundations of our new buildings on Thursday and Friday this week so there may be more traffic and noise than usual on Webster.  Also, we anticipate the new AKC portables arriving September 15 and after passing licensing requirements, occupied in early October. Once occupied, the old AKC portables will be removed. For weekly updates on construction, please see

Finally, I met with all teachers this past week to discuss and review their professional goals.  I was so impressed on how well they already knew their class and students and the goals they set forth to ensure academic and social/emotional growth for ALL children.  I am so honored to work with such a dedicated and hard-working staff and am feeling excited to support the great work ahead!
