Principal's Message, 9/1/19

Tuesday, October 15, 2019 - 2:24pm

I hope you're having a wonderful Labor Day Weekend! The students and classrooms are in full swing as they have immersed themselves in creating community, establishing routines, and learning the core curriculum. If you have not already seen our updated Parent Handbook regarding contacts, schedules, and policies, please check it out. Hard copies are also in the office.

This past Wednesday, we had two special visitors at Addison: our Superintendent, Dr. Don Austin, and Board Member, Melissa Baten Caswell!  We visited many classrooms between 8:30-9:30am.  It was wonderful to see so many of the classrooms using the Responsive Classroom strategies including a morning meeting, greeting, and activity in order to build community at the start of the day.  Other classrooms were doing Readers Workshop and math. Dr. Austin had a great time in Room 7 building number sense with our 1st graders as they counted and traded base ten blocks!  Each school is designated a Board Member liaison so Ms. Baten Caswell will be our liaison at Addison for the 2019-20 school year.

Some students have been asking when the AKC play structure will be open. The construction crew is finishing the landscaping around the play structure since the base has been raised and we hope to open it in the next couple weeks. In other playground news, the students have been doing a great job demonstrating responsibility checking in and out balls from our new ball stations! All balls have been returned at the end of recess and lunch since the first day of school. I'm also happy to share that we had many applicants for the Playworks Jr. Coach program so confirmation of their positions and upcoming trainings will be sent out next week.

Finally, I'll be meeting with all the classroom teachers on September 4th and 5th to discuss their professional goals for the year. This is a great time for us to collaborate and create short and long term goals for the year. I'm always so grateful for their thoughtful reflection and focus on supporting all students!
