Principal's Message, 5/19/19

Sunday, May 19, 2019 - 10:08pm

Dear Addison Families,

It is with mixed emotions that I send the final Principal's Message for 2018-19. This year has brought a lot of change including space, schedules, Playworks, implementing a new social studies program, and intervention services.  What remained constant was the positive attitude, optimism, open-mindedness, and commitment of our entire community throughout these changes. Thanks to the hard work of our staff and flexibility of our families, we're ending the year in a great space and feeling excited for the year ahead.

As previously mentioned, our teaching staff will remain the same at each grade level with the exception of Carol Frates who will be retiring at the end of this year. Our rising 4th grade enrollment has dropped so we will be dissolving a class as our 3rd graders move to 4th grade. Therefore, next year, we are anticipating (3) classes at each grade level. Since the 4th grade classes will be full, I've secured an extra hour of aide time for the 4th grade classes so they will have two hours of aide time in each class.

I've also doubled our reading intervention time for 3rd-5th graders as Tedi Mills will work four days per week instead of two. Through the creative brainstorm of our committed teaching staff, I've hired Amy Kageyama as an early math intervention teacher who will work on a once-a-week basis with K-2 students who need to build foundational math skills.  Amy Kageyama is a great fit for this position. She  invested many hours in professional training with the Silicon Valley Math Initiative.  She will still teach 2nd grade four days per week and job share with a very experienced and dynamic teacher, Heidi Maier-Deveau, from Fairmeadow School. Both have individual strengths in math and literacy and will make a dynamic team teaching 2nd grade.

Finally, the District is currently interviewing for a .50FTE Educational Specialist to support Marissa Tessman.  Therefore, we are hoping to have two Educational Specialists next year to support students with IEPs.

Thanks to all the students and families who joined us last Friday for a Retirement Party in the Imagination Garden for Carol Frates. She was glowing sharing memories and highlights from her career with current and former families. Check out "Carol's Corner" outside of Room 8 that has decorative rocks and a plaque in her honor.

There are many fun events planned in the last two weeks of school including the 5th grade Talent Show on Thursday, May 23 @ 9am at the Paly Haymarket Theater. We have six buses leaving Addison with students so it's a school-wide field trip!  Parents are invited to see the second performance at 5:30pm.  I hope you'll be able to join us for the Volunteer Tea and final Principal's Coffee on Friday, May 24, from 7:45-10am. Come for part or the entire event as the staff would like to thank YOU for all your volunteer hours and participation at Addison.  After the Tea, around 8:30am, I'll be hosting the last Principal's Coffee to discuss reflections from this year and the vision and goals for next year.

In the last week of school, please join us for Field Day on Wednesday, May 29, from 8:15am-12pm.  We have a few spots that need to be filled along with the waitlist so sign up today at:  https://tinyurl.com/AddisonFieldDay2019

The end of the school year will culminate with the 5thgrade activities including the Annual Kickball Game on Thursday, May 30 @ 10:40am and the 5th grade Promotion on Friday, May 31 @ 9am.  Students will be released early on May 31 @ 1:15pm.

Thank you once again for sharing this amazing school year journey with me and I look forward to celebrating with you in the weeks ahead.

Fondly,
Amanda Boyce
