Principal's Message, 3/11/18: Dear Addison Families,

Sunday, March 11, 2018 - 10:45pm

Special thanks to Ms. Ohanian and all the parent volunteers that supported Family Library Night this past week. There was a great turnout and students had fun listening to stories, participating in a library scavenger hunt, reading with a service dog, and doing art activities. We even had a visit from our Interim Superintendent, Karen Hendricks!

I'd like to invite you to the next Principal's Coffee which is on Friday, March 16, at 8:15am.  Once again, I'll spend about 30 minutes discussing a topic of interest and then take your questions.  At this gathering, our School Psychologist, Rita Rodriguez, and I will talk a little about the Student Success Team Process, 504's and IEP's.  We also have an Inclusion Parent Rep., Amy Rosenberg, who plans to attend and discuss her role in supporting families.

Finally, you might had heard that protests regarding gun and school safety are scheduled for Wednesday, March 14 from 10:00-10:17 AM. Addison School is not organizing a walkout; however, we will be providing a space, the MP Room, for our students who wish to gather and participate in this walkout event while staying on campus.  It will be a choice for students to participate or enjoy their recess as usual.

Alternatively, you are welcome to sign your child out of school to participate in the walkouts as you see fit, but please do so in the regular way. You can come to the office to sign them out with Joy or let her know ahead of time via email if you plan to check out your child or give permission for someone else to check out your child.

Some of our intermediate classes plan to discuss the protest as a current event and/or if it aligns with their curriculum but will not be sharing political views.  If students ask about the protest, some teachers will simply respond that people are walking out to send a peaceful message to the community that they believe it is important to keep kids safe at school. Other teachers might ask students to follow up at home or direct the child to the office for further discussion.

If your student would like to engage in walkouts at school or off campus on March 14, please talk about this event with them. Explain that this is a personal/ family choice and therefore should be discussed at home instead of school. We will do our best to have the day run as smoothly as possible for all of our students.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Fondly,
Amanda Boyce
Addison Principal
