Principal's Message 12/8/19

Friday, December 13, 2019 - 11:21am

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break with time to spend with loved ones and relax.  The period between Thanksgiving and the December holidays is one of my favorite times of year when I have the opportunity to reflect on the past year, slow down, and appreciate all the blessings in my life.  Thanks to all the families that participated in the Family Giving Tree gift drive.  I’m always so proud and grateful for the generosity of our community.

I spent the majority of this past week in So. CA with an instructional team from the District Office.  We visited schools in Chula Vista, Redondo Beach, and Palos Verde to learn about innovative and strategic district and site initiatives to address the needs of struggling learners.  We took the opportunity to analyze data across many subgroups in order to identify focus areas and consider next steps.  Furthermore, I gained a lot of great ideas regarding how to create opportunities for increased collaboration between our site Specialists, Aides and Classroom Teachers so that we are coordinated and intentional about how to support the growth of every child.  It was a wonderful opportunity to confirm which practices at Addison are strong and where we might grow.

During the next two weeks before Winter Break, we will be preparing to move in to the new two-story administrative and library building.  The movers are set to pack up our office and library Dec. 20-23 and I am coordinating a schedule with all the individuals moving in to the new building to unpack during the Winter Break.  We will be ready to serve students and families from our new office and library when we return from Winter Break on Jan. 7!

I will be sending more detailed information and maps out to families regarding the transition and access points to the new building.  When we return from Winter Break, the current administrative building and library will be fenced off in order to start construction on four new classrooms.  These classrooms and the new MP room are still projected to be completed by June 2020 so that we can move in to our final phase of construction this summer which includes removing the portable classrooms and upgrading our outdoor landscape and playground.

It has taken a lot of time to plan this transition and related logistics but I’m very excited to finally share the new building with the school community!  It is beautiful, functional, and flexible in order to serve the varying needs of our students.

Finally, our custodian, Lina, is taking well deserved vacation time this month.  Therefore, please welcome our substitute day custodian, Jorge Lazo, who will be with us during the next couple weeks.
