Principal's Message, 1/22/2017

Monday, January 23, 2017 - 11:14am

Dear Addison Families, I hope you enjoyed the Monday off last week. I always appreciate the MLK holiday as it gives me an opportunity to pause and remember the life of a man who brought hope to Americans and for all those individuals who have fought for equal rights.  I feel the messages of hope and unity are especially important now during these changing political times.

Last week, our School Site Council signed off on our school goals that will carry forward throughout the calendar year. They include careful analysis of our PAUSD reading and writing assessments to ensure that all students make one year's growth in both areas. In math, we are identifying the most important concepts to learn at each grade level and matching those standards to ongoing assessments. We are continuing to address the achievement gap by providing reading interventions to identified students during the school day and providing math interventions after school. Finally, our Wellness and Safety goal includes ensuring that all 1st -5th graders have at least four trusted adults on campus that they can turn to in times of need. If you would like to see the detailed plan, we will keep a copy in the school office.

As a reminder, we have four elected School Site Council parents that I meet with each month. You can share thoughts, ideas, questions, or concerns to these parents and they will bring them to our meeting. The four elected council members are Greg Wolff (parent in rooms 7 and 8), Peter Phillips (parent in room 18), Nishita Kothary (parent in rooms 7 and 11), and Irene Wong (parent in rooms 4 and 17).

At our last Principal's Coffee, I updated the group on our remodel plans. This year has been fairly quiet as the Board approved our building designs this past September so our architect team is busily drawing up the plans for submission to the Department of State Architecture (DSA). The plans can be seen on the bottom right corner of the Gelfand Architects home page. Click on "Addison" and use the password gelfand165. The updated anticipated timeline is also included. We are projected to start construction in May 2018 with completion in Fall 2019. We have also started focus groups to consider an innovative and inclusive playground and outdoor space. Once those designs have been completed, I will share those images and updates.
