Principal's Message, 1/21/18: Dear Addison Families,

Saturday, January 27, 2018 - 5:27pm

Happy New Year! Hope you all had a wonderful winter break. It was wonderful to reunite with our continuing students and meet the eight new children and families that started on Jan.8.  To quote and honor MLK Jr., "We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now."

Last week, our 5th graders attended a two night, three day overnight Mt. Hermon Science Camp for the first time and the feedback has been very positive. Students enjoyed challenging themselves to complete a six mile hike while learning about nature, kiss a banana slug, and perform skits under the stars near the campfire. I was able to attend on Thursday and Friday and it was wonderful to observe the camaraderie, cooperation, teamwork, and joy of the 5th grade class.

This is the time of year that our School Site Council (SSC) and Staff evaluate site goals from the 2016-17 school year and finalize goals for the 2017-18 school year.  Last year and this year, we included a reading, writing, math, social/ emotional learning, and (2) equity goals.  At our next SSC meeting on Wednesday, 1/24, the data and outcomes of our 2016-17 goals will be shared and an outline a draft of our 2017-18 goals will be discussed. Our SSC meetings are open to all families so if you are interested in learning more about our site goals, please join us on Wednesday from 3-5pm in the Library.
Also, over the next two weeks, grade level teams will be released for one day to review and calibrate procedures for administering our new reading assessment and check students' reading levels.  If you have concerns or questions about your child's reading skills, teachers will have the assessment results by early February and will be able to share reading strengths and areas for growth.
Finally, in case you have not heard, Camp Galileo is returning to Addison this summer for the fourth year from June 4- July 27.  We've always had positive experiences with Camp Galileo as they encourage students to explore and create.  Sign up by January 22nd to save $40 per week:
I hope 2018 brings you peace, discovery, and opportunity.
