Addison Halloween parade 2016
Monday, October 31, 2016 - 10:13am

Dear Addison Families, I am very grateful to the many parents and guardians that attended the Addison Auction last weekend. Not only did we have a wonderful time together showing our "school spirit" but we were able to raise over $130K for our PTA budget. This budget covers our school supplies, community events, assemblies, and much more.  Included in the $130K, we raised over $9K for our Fund-A-Need so our K-4 music program will be supplied with 1:1 instruments for every child and we can purchase 3D printers for our Technology Club! Thanks again to Lauren Williams, Adrienne Germain, and the many volunteers who made this possible. The staff and I really appreciate your generosity and community spirit.
We will have another opportunity to be creative and dress up again on Monday for our Halloween festivities! If you're new to Addison, the Halloween breakfast is another wonderful community event where both parents and students come in costume to connect and have fun on this "spook-tacular" day! The breakfast will start at 7:45am thanks to Missy Reller, Meredith Ackley, Rachel Thomas and all those parents who have signed up to help. The parade will begin at room 21 and we will weave our way through the school to end up on the blacktop in front of the office where student costume categories will be called out. If your family does not celebrate Halloween, your child can inform his/her teacher and we will have special accommodations during this time. Please remember that as public school entity, students cannot bring toy weapons to school.

Finally, we had a lively discussion about math instruction this past Wednesday night at our Parent Education evening. We acknowledged that in our very diverse community where many families grew up in other countries, there is a need for more discussion regarding the shifts in math instruction and curriculum due to the Common Core State Standards. Furthermore, we spent a lot of time exploring the work of Jo Boaler and her book, Mathematical Mindsets. If you haven't read the book, you may be interested in watching Jo Boaler's TEDx video: We will be joining together with families from Duveneck and Walter Hays to have a follow up parent discussion with a colleague of Jo Boaler on Nov. 17 at Addison from 6-9pm so mark your calendar!
