Principal's Message, 10/18/2015

Friday, October 23, 2015 - 4:30pm

Last Tuesday, Addison participated in a district-wide  Disaster Drill. I invited parents to"pick up" their children during the drill and we had approximately 50 students check out during the drill. Thanks to those families who participated as it allowed us to authentically practice our procedures.

There was a longer delay than expected for parents picking up students so I have reassigned more staff members to Student Release for a quicker check out. We also clarified and designated spaces where parents will wait while 5th graders retrieve students ready to be picked up from the field. The 5th graders who are helping as"student messenger runners" were trained after the drill on specific procedures and responsibilities. Finally, we fine tuned communication protocols so that all the emergency teams would have the most updated information during an actual emergency.

I wanted to remind parents of a couple things in the case of an actual emergency:

  • Please pick up your child at Student Release at the entrance of the school on Addison Avenue
  • Students will only be released to the individuals listed on the emergency cards held in the office. These were generated from the information listed in Infinite Campus so if parents would like to update or view their child's emergency card, please check in the office.
  • Guardians that are not recognized by staff but are authorized to pick up a child will be asked for their ID.

The staff is planning to run another Disaster Drill in the Spring to practice the same release procedures and improve our practices.

This Wednesday, we celebrated Unity Day. Unity Day, an opportunity to further promote kindness, anti-bullying and safe school efforts. While we all engage in this work daily, Unity Day was an opportunity to celebrate together, during Bullying Prevention month.
Finally, a group of Addison staff and parents  completed the Nike Women's Half Marathon in San Francisco on October 18th! I want to thank this wonderful group of teachers for supporting me on my personal journey to run the half-marathon and for all the words of encouragement offered by parents in the community these past couple weeks!
