Principal’s Message, 8/14/2019

Thursday, August 15, 2019 - 11:02am

On August 14th, we opened the 2019-20 school year by welcoming 385 students in eighteen classrooms.  We have three classes at each grade level and countless years of teaching experience in those classrooms.  Congratulations to Ms. Ando and Ms. Rudd who are celebrating their 20th year! Once again, thank you to the hard work of our PTA who spent hours helping me to prepare for the new school year.  They hosted both back to school events on August 9 and 14 and are one of the many reasons our school is so strong.

We have two new teachers this year at Addison.  Heidi Deveau will be a job share with Ms. Kageyama on Fridays and Kathy Roddy was hired as a half-time Educational Specialist to support students with IEPs.  This year we are also welcoming 62 new families.  If you were able to attend the Back to School Coffee, you heard from both myself and our PTA President, Lauren Williams, to get involved early!  Addison is truly a special place.  Some of the closest friendships are made at Addison through the volunteer opportunities and the connections made in your child(ren)’s classrooms.

If you have been away from Addison during the summer, hopefully you were pleasantly surprised seeing the amazing progress that took place with our construction project! Our two-story administrative/ library/ flex classrooms building is projected to be completed by December so our office staff and library are anticipating moving in to the new building during the Winter Break.  Once we move in, our next phase includes remodeling the interior of our current office and library in to four classrooms which is projected to be completed by June 2020.  Concurrent with the redesign of that building, the MP room is projected to be completed by March 2020 and will serve as a space for students to each lunch every day and for us to gather for school wide events and assemblies.  Next summer, we should be able to relocate the teachers in the portables and remove the portables.  Finally, our entire outdoor space including the field, blacktop, and playground will be upgraded.  After five years of planning this remodel, is it so exciting to anticipate the many changes in store this year!

I plan to share more information about the District and Site goals at our Back to School Night which is this Tuesday, August 20.  Grade 3-5 families will report to their child’s classroom at 6pm.  Next we will have the K-5 family gathering in the Courtyard at 6:50pm and then Grade K-2 families will report to their child’s class at 7:15pm.  It will be a very informative night and I know the teachers are eager to meet you.  Finally, mark your calendars for Picture Day which is next Friday, August 23!

I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday and the great year ahead!
