Back to School Welcome from Principal Boyce

Friday, August 5, 2016 - 11:48am

Dear Addison Families,

I hope you had a great summer and enjoyed the time spent with your beautiful children! My family and I traveled to Cabo San Lucas and San Diego and then I spent a week on my own in New York. The highlight of that trip was attending the Columbia University Teacher’s College Readers Workshop training with five other teachers from Addison. It was inspirational, exciting, and validating as we explored how to ensure that ALL students find the joy in reading and develop the skills to be proficient readers. Another large group of Addison teachers attended the same training here in Palo Alto as the Teacher’s College trainers came to our district last week. There are many other exciting
curricular developments we will be exploring this year such as the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) so I hope you’ll join me at our Back to School Coffee on Aug. 16 and Principal’s Coffee on Sept. 9 to hear more!

This year, we are welcoming four new teachers at Addison. I am very excited to introduce Kelly Dowd who will be teaching 1st grade in room 4. Kelly was a teacher at the former school where I was Principal so I’m thrilled she will be sharing her many talents with Addison. Jonathan Kessler will be our new PE teacher providing PE instruction for all students in K-5. You may be familiar with Jonathan as he is
also the head wrestling coach at Paly! Melanie Zhao is our new K-4 music teacher who brings a wealth of knowledge and energy to our staff. Finally, we are very fortunate to welcome Kim Peckenpaugh as our full-time Reading Specialist. She is an experienced and beloved teacher from Nixon School with a great reputation for advancing the skills of struggling readers.

One other change you will notice this year is that Addison will be providing breakfast for any interested student due to our recent Title One designation. Breakfast will be served from 7:45-8:05am every day in the MP Room. Students will need to stay in the MP Room until our assigned teachers can provide campus supervision outside. This is a wonderful opportunity to make sure all students are well fed and ready for a new day.

Nancy and I returned to work last Thursday so the office is now open from 8am-4pm. Please see the list of important upcoming dates as we start the 2016-17 school year:

• The Kindergarten Screening is on Wednesday, August 10. The families of entering Kindergarteners have been mailed their child’s appointed time but feel free to call the office if the information is needed.

• For new families, PTA will be hosting two New Family Campus Tours on Friday, August 12th from 3:30-4pm OR 6-6:30pm. Please meet in front of the MP Room.

Classroom/ teacher assignments will posted outside of room 3 in the hallway on August 12th at 4pm. Please keep in mind that a lot of time and careful consideration goes into creating balanced classes. Please plan on picking up your Back to School Packet that contains important information on August 12th between 4-7pm near the MP Room.

• Our Kindergarten Potluck/Play Date will be held on the Kindergarten playground on August 12th from 4-7pm.

• The first day of school is Tuesday, August 16th at 8:15am. After dropping off your child, the PTA will host our annual Back to School Coffee from 8:15-9:15am on the blacktop. At that time, I look forward to welcoming you in person!

Thank you again to PTA and PiE for all your support in opening the new school year. The time and funding that these two important parent groups provide enable the unique opportunities and community building that promote student success.

I look forward to starting another year of growth and collaboration and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions prior to the start of school.
