Addison World Cup
Monday, February 29, 2016 - 1:39pm

Calling all Lionel Messi fans, athletes, and kids who just want to have fun -- the Addison World Cup Tournament is open for sign ups! Addison students, teachers, and staff are welcome to join our popular annual penalty shoot-out tournament. Sign up sheets have been posted in each classroom. Sign ups will close on Monday, March 14.

Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about signing up for the Addison World Cup:

When will the tournament be held?
The tournament will run from late March through early May. The number of matches depends on the number of students who sign up. The tournament schedule will be posted on March 16.

How are teams formed?
Students will be assigned to teams by the tournament director. The tournament will feature 3 brackets: grades 3-5, grades 1-2, and kindergarten. Teams will feature multiple grades and ability levels. Sorry, requests for friends to be on a specific team cannot be accommodated.

When will my student know which team he/she is on?
The tournament director will hold an informational meeting to go over the tournament rules on March 16. All participants must attend this meeting. Team sheets will be posted after the meeting.

Can kindergarten students join?
Yes! Kinder students will be placed in a separate tournament bracket. Kinder matches will be held on Wednesdays, when all kinder students are present.

Can my child sign up to be a goal keeper?
Yes! There is a "goalie checkbox" on the sign-up form; anyone interested in being a goalie should check that box. All players on a team will be penalty kickers, so if your child signs up to be a goalie, he/she will also get a chance to take a penalty kick.

Can parents watch the games?
Yes! Matches will be held at lunch recess (11:45 for grades 3-5, 12:15 for grades 1-2). Parents are welcome to come on campus (please stop by the office for a visitor tag) and cheer for their child's team. Parents can also volunteer to set up the field, sign in players, and tally score sheets. If interested, please contact Ana Picazo (
