Principal's Update September 26, 2021
Dear Addison Families,
There are many wonderful things happening at Addison! Our partnership with the Palo Alto Junior Museum has begun and “Bill the Science Guy” has been visiting classrooms and teaching lessons these past couple weeks. If you’re new to Addison, you’ll quickly learn that Bill is a student favorite as he teaches hands-on, engaging science lessons. Additionally, PAUSD has hired Bryant Hicks as a Productive Play Coach to work at the school sites on cooperative games and social-emotional learning. He came to Addison this past Monday and Tuesday and worked with students at recess and lunch. He also taught special games to all of our Kindergarten and 1st grade classes as many of them are learning how to navigate our school space for the first time and resolve conflict during play. Students and staff commented how much they enjoyed Bryant's visit so he will be sharing a regular visitation schedule with all sites in October. Please see attached photos of Bill and Bryant in action!
We also had our first Project Cornerstone parent training on Thursday. Our Project Cornerstone parent readers will begin visiting classrooms to read the same book to all Kindergarten-5th graders that cover a variety of themes including perseverance, anti-bullying strategies, “filling someone’s bucket,” and many other important life lessons. The books connect to a Lifeskill each month and our Lifeskill for September/October is CARING. Hopefully you will be hearing more about these stories, Lifeskills, and connections with the parent readers from your children. We appreciate the parent volunteer readers as we build strong student-adult connections in our community.
Next week will be focused on reading assessment and intervention. On Tuesday, September 28th, our 3rd- 5th grade teaching teams will be released from class for an hour and a half to analyze student reading data and collaborate on approaches to intervention. The team of support specialists will join the meetings as we continue working hard to ensure that all students reach reading benchmarks. On Friday, October 1st, we have a Staff Development Day so there will be NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS. Grade-level teams from across all PAUSD Elementary School sites will come together to calibrate and practice our Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) for reading. Starting mid-year in Kindergarten, students are assessed in reading using the BAS and their progress is tracked and monitored 3x/year after Kindergarten. Addison is hosting all the PAUSD Kindergarten teachers on Friday in the MP Room.
It’s hard to believe that we are entering October next week and there are more exciting events ahead! The week of October 4th is “Walk and Roll Week.” Students are encouraged to walk, bike, scooter, or use shared transportation that week (and every week!). Teachers will tally each day how students arrived to school and the class with the most students using alternative forms of transportation from single-occupancy vehicles will win the coveted “Golden Sneaker” award! Full-day Kindergarten will begin on October 11th so our Kindergarteners will be dismissed at 2:20pm after this date. Unity Day is on October 20th and of course students are anticipating Halloween so remain on the lookout as we share more information on both of these upcoming events!
