Principal's Update- May 15, 2022
Dear Addison Families,
This past Friday we celebrated all our volunteers in the morning and then held our final Principal/Parent Coffee for the year. I wanted to share highlights from both events.
At the Volunteer Tea, we were able to honor our parent volunteers from 2021-22 which include our PTA, Site Council, lunch campus supervisors, art and library helpers, COVID testing support, Project Cornerstone, and classroom volunteers. I am deeply grateful for the 50+ parents/guardians who offered their support during a very uncertain period of time. I remembered and realized it was our amazing volunteers who raised their hands to support our staff at the beginning of the year before COVID vaccines were an option for our elementary students. THANK YOU for helping Addison take steps towards building back community and supporting teaching and learning through your generous time.
Then at the Principal/Parent Coffee, I shared my personal reflections and highlights from the year which included experiences with social-emotional learning, equity, early literacy, and community. I shared with parents that this was the year we had to teach or re-teach students how to “do” school. For many of our students, they had had limited school experience in the past couple years so learning cooperation, perseverance, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and the “group plan” were concepts that had to be practiced, learned, or re-learned.
This year, we have been very focused on the concepts of equity and early literacy. During school closure, it became very apparent that we had to reach students and support families in different ways in order to ensure growth. At both the District and Site levels, we have spent this year analyzing early literacy data to carefully consider how to intervene when students are not meeting reading benchmarks so that ALL students graduate Addison as confident and joyful readers.
Thanks to our amazing PTA, we have been able to bring our community together this year. When we learned we could host on-campus events, our PTA quickly assembled to plan the May Fête Parade, Family Picnic, Movie Night, and Heritage Night events. Additionally, we were thrilled to bring back some beloved school events including Inquiry Fair and Field Day. Thank you to the many parents who have signed up for Field Day. I have no doubt the end of this year will bring a lot of joy and connection, so we appreciate your continued involvement!
Finally, at the Coffee on Friday, it was so wonderful to introduce Jeff Downing, incoming Addison Principal! I’ve really enjoyed getting to know him and he has proven to be humble, funny, easygoing, thoughtful, and student-centered. Addison has a bright future ahead under Jeff’s leadership!
