Principal's Update - August 29, 2021

Dear Addison Families,
The new school year is off to a great start! The students have seemed very joyful and appreciative to be back on campus. One of the students even told me this week that “(he) will never take for granted again being able to come to school each day.” Teachers have spent a lot of time getting to know their new students, building classroom communities, and sharing information with families regarding what to expect in each class at our Back to School Night. If you were not able to attend Back to School Night last Tuesday, please contact your child(ren)’s teachers regarding what you may have missed.
We’ve also started our Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings on two of our District/Site Goal Areas: Reading and Equity. Each grade level team met to discuss our beginning-of-the-year Orton-Gillingham phonological awareness assessments as we are currently administering these in addition to our beginning-of-the-year math and writing assessments. Last Wednesday, our Superintendent of Equity and Strategic Initiatives, Yolanda Conaway, joined our Equity PLC to help us start brainstorming what areas of equity we want to explore and grow in as a staff this year related to education. Addison staff will continue to meet  once per month for each focus area to further our work in both reading and equity.
As you know, we had a positive COVID case within our school community this past week. The notifications and processes went smoothly including distributing and collecting COVID tests to and from the close contacts immediately upon notification and on day five after exposure. I will continue to communicate as needed regarding any positive COVID cases but this is a good time to remind families to please keep your children at home and schedule a COVID test if he/she has any of the following symptoms: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, new or unexplained sore throat, new or unexplained fatigue, new or unexplained muscle aches, new or unexplained headache, loss of taste or smell, new or unexplained nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. If any of these symptoms are detected at school, we will need to immediately contact the family, ask for the child to be picked up and request a COVID test before the child can return to school.
This week, Addison begins our partnership with Predicine Labs and will be providing on-site COVID-19 testing for interested students and staff. Elementary students will use an oral swab, while older students and staff will use a nasal swab. In the Superintendent’s Update, Dr. Austin listed Addison testing on Tuesdays but please note it has been changed to Wednesdays. PAUSD will send out notification via Parent Square with an electronic Test Requisition Form (TRF) in multiple languages on Monday which needs to be completed at home and then brought to school on Wednesday.  Please note that I’ve also included the link to the English Test Requisition Form and Spanish Test Requisition Form here. The front office will work with teachers on a schedule when students who have a completed TRF form will be pulled out of class for testing by Predicine employees. Feel free to email me with any questions.
We held our first School Site Council (SSC) Meeting this past Wednesday and will be meeting again on September 22nd and then the third Wednesday of each month after September.  Our meetings are held via Zoom and anyone is welcome to join; the Zoom link and reminders will be included in the upcoming newsletters. The School Site Council is composed of an even balance of staff members and parents/guardians who discuss community/campus concerns and programmatic goals. If you would like to reach out to any of our parent SSC representatives this year with your thoughts on these topics, please contact the following individuals: Karna Nisewaner (Chair): Emily Meyer: Christine Boehm: or Jacob Kivett:
Finally, I have to highlight and send special THANKS to one of our SSC parent reps, Emily Meyer.  Our community benefited from her design background as she spearheaded the vision and execution of the beautiful artwork that took place on our campus this past summer. She led the efforts for the painted murals in the administrative building and library and the tile mosaic that was removed from the old MP room and replaced in the Imagination Garden. Emily gave us countless volunteer hours and our school community is very grateful for her work. Please see the Addison Summer 2021 Mural/Mosaic Photos and enjoy!
