Principal's Update April 17, 2022

Dear Addison Families,

The end of the year is fast approaching and we have so many great events planned! Students learned about our annual Inquiry Fair at this past Monday’s school-wide assembly. It’s a great tradition at Addison when students are encouraged to spend a month exploring their many questions and selecting one to research. The culmination of the project is a creative display board that highlights their question, research, and findings. The Inquiry Fair is optional for grades K-4 and if students are interested, they can pick up an informational booklet with directions and timelines from their teacher. This is a requirement for 5th graders and all displays will be shared in our MP room for parents to view on Thursday, May 12th, from 5-7pm.

This month, we are holding our first community event – Library Night! Our Librarian, Ms. Ohanian, sent information about this fun event (with a request for volunteers) so mark your calendars for Thursday, April 21st, from 6-7:30pm.  Additionally, our 3rd-5th graders will be taking the CAASPP tests beginning the week of April 25th. If you have a 3rd- 5th grade student, please reference the CAASPP testing schedule here. It’s important for students to attend school on the testing days, so that we can limit make-ups in May. If you have any questions about CAASPP testing, feel free to email Joy Frick as she is our CAASPP Coordinator (

There are many more exciting events planned in May and June so please mark your calendars and share the following events with your child(ren) so they know what to anticipate!

  • May 2nd-6th: Staff/Teacher Appreciation Week
  • May 7th: May Fête Parade/Alumni Open House/Family Picnic
  • May 11th: Mr. Downing, new Principal, meets students at lunch!
  • May 12th: Inquiry Fair Open House, 5-7pm
  • May 13th: Principal/Parent Coffee, 8:15am. Mr. Downing meets parents!
  • May 13th: Movie Night: 6-8pm (sign up here)
  • May 20th: Heritage Night, 5:30-7:30pm
  • May 24th: 5th Grade Talent Show, 6-7:30pm
  • May 25th: “Bump It Up” Day (students visit classrooms in next grade level), 12:45pm
  • May 31st: Field Day (all classes invited), 8:20am- 12pm
  • June 1st: 5th Grade Kickball vs. Staff/Parents (all classes invited), time TBD
  • June 2nd: 5th Grade Promotion (all classes invited), time TBD

I also wanted to offer a couple reminders from messages sent this past week via Parent Square: If you are interested in being a parent representative on our 2022-23 Site Council please email me by Wednesday, April 20th. If you want to provide input on your child(ren)’s class placement next year, please pick up an input form or request an electronic one from Nancy in the front office and turn it in by Friday, April 22nd.

Finally, as we finish out the school year, Mr. Downing and I will be working together to hire staff for our open positions for next year.  I’m very excited to announce that Amy Kageyama, current 4th grade teacher, has been hired to fill the role as Librarian next year!  She has many great new ideas to support students with the love of reading and digital citizenship and will carry on many of the engaging and inclusive community practices established by Ms. Ohanian.

Therefore, Mr. Downing and I will be working together to hire a Secretary, Kindergarten, and 3rd grade teacher since our two-strand class will be moving to 4th grade. As soon as these positions are filled, I’ll continue to update our community.
