Principal's Message, 10/15/17: Dear Addison Families,

Monday, October 16, 2017 - 1:48pm

Thank you for your patience this past week as we grappled with the air quality index and how to protect student health. Upon the recommendation of our District Nurse, field trips and outdoor programs were cancelled, and students were kept indoors during our recess and lunch periods.

This past week, we also practiced procedures in the case of a declared emergency, most likely an earthquake in our geographic region. The staff did a great job reporting on student attendance, searching the buildings and reporting to command center, and practicing the procedures for student supervision, first aid, and student release. Please note that in the case of an emergency, students can only be released to the emergency contacts listed on your child's Infinite Campus account. If you need to add or edit any of the emergency contacts, please talk to Joy or Nancy in the front office.

I'm very excited to share that our Addison teachers joined together and did a variety of fundraising for Hurricane Relief. Primary classes made origami cards to sell, other classes sold used books and personal items, and our intermediate classes participated in a read-a-thon. Donations were made to Teachers College: Literacy Lifeboats and the American Red Cross.  All together, 12 classes participated in fundraising and Addison raised approximately $6000! Please see the Konstella message from Sarah Gibbs regarding the North Bay Wildfire Donation Drive ending tomorrow.

More exciting news... along with the edible gardens, our native garden was built last Friday!  Please check out these beautiful gardens parallel to Addison Avenue as students will be engaging in a variety of science lessons using the gardens.

Once again, I'd like to thank the Perkins Family for donating the funds to build the gardens and purchase the Living Classrooms curriculum this year.  One of the Fund-a-Need items at this year's Auction will be the opportunity to provide ongoing funding to continue the program in the next few years.  While this is not a district adopted curriculum, the garden curriculum does align with our Next Generation Science Standardsand is a great hands-on opportunity for students.

I hope you'll all be able to join me at the Addison Auction next Saturday, 10/21!  My leg warmers and jelly bracelets are ready to go but costumes are optional. This is a great community building event and historically the only PTA fundraiser for the year. All funds will be used to pay for school assemblies, school supplies, buses, field trips, classroom "wish lists" and so much more. While fundraising is a very important part of the auction, spending time with other parents and staff members is another important reason to attend. Hope to see you there! https://addisonpapta.ejoinme.org/MyEvents/2017ILoveThe80s/BuyAuctionTicket/tabid/889257/Default.aspx
